Pat20a week 9 heart failure: compare normal cardiac physiology to a compromised heart in patients with heart failure (hf) Primary goal of normal heart function: pump oxygenated blood through systemic circulatory system to perfuse the body, & pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs to be oxygenated. If have l-sided heart failure(1st/most common): co is not moving forward through the l-side of the heart (usually d/t mi) so it will go backward toward the lungs pulmonary edema will lead into. If have r-sided hf (as a result of l-side. Structural or functional disorder of heart inhibiting normal heart function. Abnormal clinical syndrome involving impaired cardiac pumping/filling. Usually results from htn, cad, and mi. Characterized by: ventricular dysfunction, reduced exercise tolerance, diminished qol, shortened life expectancy. High mortality (8-yr survival rate of 15%) Results from decline in sv from: systolic hf/dysfunction. When heart muscle doesn"t contract with enough force. Insufficient oxygen-rich blood pumped throughout body: diastolic hf/dysfunction.
