Care requires hands on, active caring, skill, effort, Empathy and understanding what is right and wrong. To ease or to sharpen suffering lies in its transformative nature. Pt. describe non-caring encounters as acid-edged and memorable experiences . Uncaring nurses = cold, cold human beings, like computers . Uncaring nurses only perform tasks: denying pt. feelings, responding w/ inform tasks, failing to see if a pain med had worked or not, not checking pt unless you actually have to go do work for them. Response of care can transform the fear and pain of illness nd suffering into a tolerable, shared experience. Enables an emotional connection that relieves the loneliness of the sufferer. Nurse does not step back to observe the pt. but is engaged in the pt. experience.
