Ethnomusicologists live in the society & observe music making. Music is often regarded as accompaniment to dance. Oral traditions (instead of written music) that are passed down. Homophonic texture (vocals carry melody, instruments provide accompaniment) Polyrhythms (more than one rhythm played at same time) Rhythms were brought to brazil during slave trade. Hand-made instruments (animal hides, wood, nuts, gourds and seeds) 2 important facts: played in dawn ceremony; repetition; 3 layers; sonic distortion.
