Document Summary

In the reading, montesquieu provides an insightful description of the how a democratic nation operated and the moral values it holds. Montesquieu describes democracy as a type of government where the people as a body have sovereign power, in a sense everyone is a monarch. They are monarchs from the perspective that everyone has a fundamental right to vote and speak their mind when establishing new public policies and making important decisions (page 11). It is important that the people elect someone to make these decisions so that they can trust to prevent corruption and uphold the virtuous aspect of a democratic nation. When looking at a monarchy or despotic type of government, pleasing the citizens is not a priority, however, this mindset is of critical importance in a democracy as it needs to uphold its spring of virtue (page 22).
