Shows man making idea geometric forms of circle and square. Underlying order and unity in the universe. New organization of space- picture plane, looking through a window, organized in idea, better than reality, reflect more secular and humanist ideals. Full page illustrations, separation of word and image, increased importance of pictures. For duc de berry: traditional object, medieval but new in size of illustration and subject. Book of hours: devotional prayer book and calendar. Tempera: flat, matte, dries quickly but oil can be built up, gives richness and contrast. Van eyck famous for introducing new medium: oil paint, not tempera. Mirror: he"s in it, his signature is above = prominent. Deposition: christ being taken down from the cross. Express new interest in world, observation of real world.
