Hst 701 - scientific technology and modern society. Us congress recognized italian-american antonio meucci as phone inventor in 2002. Meucci filed a "caveat" in 1971 for a talking telegraph. Caveats are not patents: technology did not have to work. Bell filed patent application hours before elisha gray filed a caveat for a telephone: february 14, 1876. Bell"s system worked ! and therefore he was known for the invention of the telephone. Electric light and power, electric storage batteries, magnetic ore separation; motion pictures, duplex telegraphy, telephone transmitters. Worked to maintain and improve status quo. Background in field: (edison was a telegraph operator), his family came from ontario. Poorer inventors used machine shops and model-builders and used them to create prototypes. Successful inventors created their own machine shops known as invention factories. Menlo park - very first invention factory dedicated for radical new technologies.
