Heinrich horlein demanded research on sulphonamides as antibiotics. Gerard domagk at bayer labs bacteriology dept - screened dyes. 1932 discovered red sulphonamide dye effective against streptococcal infections in mice. 1933 saved daughter who got septicaemia infection. They wanted to patent this product in 1935 before putting it on the market before someone else stole their idea. Had to retain azo dye to get patent. P. gelmo of vienna discovered sulphonamides in 1908. > death rates in queens charlotte"s hospital fell down from 35/100 to 5/1000. British avoided royalties in ww2 by dropping useless dye component. The problem: was that they could not mass produce this type of medical supply and thus the ability to produce many qualities were very limited. ^ this was to prevent corporations from taking excess profits.
