Some debates about the electrification of a cloud. There must be a separation of positive and negative charges in cloud for lighting to occur. A thunderstorm has turbulent winds - negative charges gather near the base of the cloud positive near the upper reaches. A channel of negative charges makes a path to the ground where positive charges have concentrated on tall objects. This channel can branch out in many directions. At same time, pat of positive charges moving up 0 normally elevated objects, like trees. When meet, about 30 to 100 meters about ground the negative charges flow downward by a much larger [and luminous] current shoots up to the cloud alone the downward path. This is lightening, whole process is less than a second. Lightning is within a cloud or cloud to cloud is the most common flickering or sheet lightning" the bolt cannot be seen.
