Give socio-cultural/historical framework: shift in demographic (performers and audience) From 1969 = umbrella term for black musical styles (replaced r&b ) Rough, raspy vocals and use of call and response: from the blues stream. Rhythmic drive; powerful bass lines, syncopated riffs, steady beat: syncopated accenting off the main beat. Popular in late 1960s, but pioneered in the 50s by ray charles. Popular as r&b artists in the 50s. Blended country tunes, tpa standard, blues, pop, jazz and gospel styles: diverse output and synthesis of styles. Released concept album (1962) modern sounds in country and western music with orchestral tpa-style accompaniment, jazz piano, gospel and blues influence. Very much like baptists service; but also orgasmic sounding. Ray = successful on r&b pop charts, but not country chart (more conservative, mainstream, old-school ethos) James brown papa"s got a brand new bag . His first number 1 and biggest pop hit.
