ENH 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Notifiable Disease, Abdominal Pain, Rhinitis
Document Summary
Infection and outbreaks result from a complex interaction between the host, the agent and the environment. We direct our interventions at: controlling our eliminating agent at source transmission, protecting portals of entry, )ncreasing host(cid:495)s defenses. How do we find out about outbreaks: surveillance data (reportable disease, syndromic, registries, active, etc, concerned clinician/ nurse, members of the community or group. Why do we investigate outbreak: control and prevention, sometimes public anxiety, political pressures, and legal concerns are involved, this can result in research and new knowledge, and program and procedure review. On march 20, the local hospital reported three children (2, 10 and 15 years) with severe gastroenteritis. Is this an outbreak: you will treat it as an outbreak because a venerable population is at risk. If lab samples were taken, if the kids are related, if they have any common area between them. It is 3. 30 pm on a sunday afternoon, 23 july 2010.
