Picture books are often for privileged kids so the reader is shown how people who aren"t privileged live. A body of work that is already known to a reader/viewer. Everything that you already know shapes who you are as a person. Prior knowledge about history, geography, religion, and culture. Texts create narrative worlds that showcase a specific segment of the real world. Shows a cultural practice but it is hard for lailah to fit in in her class because it is hard for her to tell the teacher and her friends that she is celebrating ramadan. Shows one way of overcoming the hurdle of being the only muslim. Kids that don"t know about ramadan need to be taught step by step. Trauma: opportunity to work through traumatic events of the past.
