Document Summary

Set in 1944 near the end of the civil war: looking back at a section of history from a modern perspective. The fascist regime fighting the last of the protestors: in real-life fascists won! (bad prevailed) But in this story the resistance wins in the struggle. Fascism (real-life) plot and fairytale plot merged together: we wonder if we are meant to believe the fantasy world as more than just a dream (that it exists) Weaving through real-life history told through fantasy. Fairytale: the heroin"s journey (escape) to the spirit world: ofelia copes with her daily struggles (trapped) with her nasty step- father (mother and father died) Deals with this with a fairytale dream world: fantasy and escape combined with a rebelliousness of social structures. She has agency and tasks to do in this fantasy world (is powerless in real world but fulfilled in fantasy world) When the mandrake root is found (actually exists) and is burned in the fire.
