DST 500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Governmentality, Gender Dysphoria, Labeling Theory
Document Summary
Understand the relationship between deviance and normalcy. Be able to describe how labeling/naming/diagnosing produces madness (or makes people mad). It is something that is produced in our culture and in people. Be able to discuss some of the investments in making madness a problem. Start to question the role that sickness (mental illness) and health play in governing people"s lives. Deviant definition: differing from a norm or from the accepted standards of a society. One that differs from a norm, especially a person whose behaviour and attitudes differ from accepted social standards. Deviance has a relationship with normalcy, we cannot think about deviancy without engaging it with this concept. Normalcy: norms are always changing, norms are historically and culturally specific. We can examine how these norms include and excluded certain individuals: normalcy isn"t naturally the norm- we create the normative order (the unspoken way of doing things)! We are all participating in upholding these norms: norms define deviancy.
