Child abuse and neglect: self care and critical re ection. The impact of caring/child abuse and neglect: there are few occupations that impact so profoundly on practitioners as that of child and youth care. Listening to and being exposed to traumatic content takes a toll on the workers sense of self and sense of security. Cyc"s rely on the use of self to form relationships and guide interventions. While empathy is often used as a means of building rapport with a child client there is a risk of internalizing emotionally disturbing material. Furthermore a caseworker may become personally affected by using empathy and re-living the traumatic experience of a client through their story. Symptoms of burn-out (physiological: emotional distancing from your client, decreased empathy, cynicism, decreased self-esteem, physical exhaustion, sleep disturbances. Increased alcohol intake: reduced sense of of professional accomplishment.
