Three approaches (schools of thought/theories) to ethics: virtue ethics, formalism, utilitarianism. Relied on predecessors to develop virtue ethics. Plato"s the republic illustrates the ideal city. Citizens are morally virtuous, ethical, high moral standards. All human activity is aimed at some good. Going to class to get good grades, a better job. Have intrinsic values, pursue for its own sake. Things we ought to desire and work for. Goods needed for livelihood: wealth (above subsistence level), pleasure, knowledge (understanding/wisdom) Eg; become rich to have power over others. Everything we do is to achieve happiness. All the real goods helps us achieve happiness. Moral virtue : the disposition to make the right choices courage, temperance, prudence, justice, pride, ambition, having a good temper, being a good friend, truthfulness and wittiness. (table 2. 2) Good temper: balance b/w quick to anger and not showing anger when warranted. Just: taking no more or less action than is due, under the circumstances.
