Roadmap: what criminology is trying to explain, explanations that focus on individuals, explanations that focus on communities. Relationship between individuals and society, not just factors internal to individuals. Connection to sociology: late 19th early 20th c. Thought something specific must be happening in the community that is causing this, it is not the individual if you"re looking at a period of several decades. If we"re looking at individual"s crime should fluctuate not remain the same. Looked t population density where lots of people lived in the same place and concluded more crime occurred in urban areas than rural areas. Greater individualism ---> lack of social cohesion ---> suicide and crime. Culturally prescribed aspirations: getting a good job, being able to travel, have money, happiness, health, status, respect. Socially structured means of achieving those goals: ex. If you want a car you will work and get money to pay for it not steal a car. Gap between these ---> strain: ex.
