Precedent- using the result or judgement in a court case being used in future cases that are similar- judges set out a precedent which is what is used for future laws. Maintenance of law was largely left to military\ After 1867- federal government took responsibility for creating laws. Police of canada act- established police force, led to formation of rmcp. Criminal code- most criminal charges people are found with are found in criminal code- continuously updated, contains mainly criminal acts. Three sources- legislation (statutes), constitution, previous court decisions. Statutes- pieces of legislation enacted by federal government (criminal code of canada), contain criminal offences.
