Family dominated publishing in nova scotia for nearly 150 years. Controlled 2 newspapers, brother in law controlled local newspaper. Son joseph howe was one of the fathers of confederation. Became head of family business in 1793, took over printing business. Largest consumer of paper in canada for a long time. Half of the subscribers were french speakers, more than a thousand. Works of english and american authors, people could bind their own books. Born in lower canada, apprentice at a montreal newspaper place. With help of benjamin dejeer, he opened his own newspaper in 1917. Elected to colonial assembly in 1837, took part in the rebellion/uprising.
