CRI 420 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Prepress, Typesetting
Document Summary
The main creative activity of a publishing house is choosing the right books. The editor in chief (in a small press sometimes the publisher) works with literary agents and authors externally, and with editors and readers, internally, to come up with projects to sign up and publish. The managing editor and the production manager work together to take the properties that have been acquired and (cid:862)put bodies(cid:863) to them. This involves editing, designing, typesetting, proofreading, and printing. Sales, marketing, publicity, these functions can t be structured many different ways, but basically the marketing efforts of a publishing house are performed by people who plan promotional campaigns, run those campaigns, sell to bookstores, sell to special accounts, etc. Even if all the above is brilliantly done, everything would fall apart without a good operations side to the business. This includes accounting, customer service, warehouse, human resources, etc.
