Document Summary

Creative work is often marked by personal experiences of vulnerability and self-doubt. Massive "reservoir" of labour means that wages are depressed, and in many cases workers especially young people - are willing to work for free. "churning out" workers invokes a sense of mechanistic dehumanisation, "spitting them out" suggests an animalistic gobbling up of workers, before they are rejected as inadequate for consumption. Three key aspects: workers needing to be flexible with their time; workers not getting paid commensurate to the hours actually worked; and workers having to take on second jobs to make ends meet. One of the problems for creative workers is that they are often, at least on the face of it, "free" to decide whether to take on such long hours. One trade union official has pointed out that "freelances arguably have more need of union support than do permanently employed workers.
