Symbolic interactionists argue culture is not just accepted passively by people: rather, individuals produce and interpret culture, creatively fashioning it to suit their own needs. Implies people are to a degree at liberty of choosing how culture influences them. Can act as unifying force that brings together people from diverse backgrounds. Diversity of realities/cultures in canada/caribbean quite evident at individual level. Diversity evident in all aspects of life, including: choice of mate, music, clothing, architecture, foods.
