English physician who pioneered the first epidemiological study. Conducted a series of interviews of houses with cholera deaths and built a profile of each one. Epidemic- concentrated in one small area- localized. Pandemic- affects many areas all over the country or world sporadic disease- occurs in random areas- no baseline public health monitoring. How we determine whether a sporadic, epidemic or pandemic disease is occurring. Many diseases are deemed reportable list of reportable diseases- those with asterix are immediately reportable, to initiate contact tracing/outbreak control causes of death have changed dramatically in the last 90 years.
