Paul thought jesus would come back very soon and thus did not think abut the possibility of people dying beforehand. Thus paul is working our the answer to this question (what happens to people who die before jesus comes back: those who believe in jesus will be saved from the apocalyptic wrath. Uses the word asleep instead of dead paul is arguing that they are not actually dead (1 thess: 4:14) Mixed metaphors; its gunna happen but it will be a surprise.
