Document Summary
Coping: strategies that an individual employs to deal with stresses caused by the ever-changing demands of the environment. Stress literacy: the degree to which an individual (or community understands the effects of stress) Homeostasis: the dynamic physiological response to maintain a stable internal state in spite of the demands of the environment. Fight-or-flight (or freeze) response: autonomic reaction when faced with a perceived threat: female- tend and befriend = nurturing activities and creating a social network. Is highly complex: begins when an individual perceives a real or actual threat. Involves two major components: nervous system and the endocrine system. Hypothalamus- initiates the stress response in both the nervous and endocrine systems. Nervous system: central nervous system (cns)- brain + spinal cord, peripheral nervous system (pns)- somatic + autonomic [sympathetic + parasympathetic] Sympathetic- initiates fight-or-flight response when triggered by the hypothalamus. Parasympathetic- also activated by hypothalamus to re-establish homeostasis.
