In the past, what happens before age 8 was considered irrelevant. What mattered was that the child was taken care of. In the 1960"s, there was a philosophy that the most important part of looking after children in the hospital was just to look after their physical needs. Contact with the outside world was limited, and the child was often alone. Only 3 people could visit (the mother, the father, and a religious leader). John bowlby: born in 1907, london england, was particularly interested in freud"s analysis and the idea that the parent-child relationship is important for development, career was interrupted by the war. Conducted research with john bowlby for about a decade. Developed the strange situation as a technique for assessing attachment. Child is first left alone with a stranger. When the mother returns, the child"s reaction is assessed. The stranger returns and attempts to comfort the child, and the child"s reaction is assessed once again.
