Disorders in which the anxiety and/or distress is focused on specific somatic symptoms or illness. Disorders in which the anxiety and/or distress is experienced or expressed as a physiological phenomenon i. e. somatic symptom disorder. Psychological factors affecting medical conditions i. e. conversion disorder. One or more somatic symptoms that are distressing or result in significant disruption of daily life. Excessive thoughts, feelings, and behaviours related to the somatic symptoms or associated health concerns as manifested by a least one of the following: Disproportionate and persistent thoughts about the seriousness of one"s symptoms. Persistently high level of anxiety about health or symptoms. Excessive time and energy devoted to these symptoms or health concerns. Although any one somatic symptom may not be continuously present, the state of being symptomatic is persistent (6 months) Somatic symptoms may or may not have clear medical cause. Either way the symptoms are experienced as real and distressing. There might not be a clear explanation for the symptoms.
