PSYC 215 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Bulbous Corpuscle, Lamellar Corpuscle, Postcentral Gyrus
Document Summary
Psyc 215 week 3 chapter 3 readings. All of this info is supplied by two anatomically separate sensory systems: the somatosensory system (touch, proprioception, and kinesthesis), and the vestibular system (balance) Direct contact with other people is responsible for some of our most intense sensory experience. Proprioception and kinesthesis might seem invisible, but they are vital for normal bodily functioning, and their absence is severely disabling (see example of iw) The somatosensory system includes eight different kinds of receptor, and two separate pathways linking receptors to the primary receiving area in the cerebral cortex. Touch receptors (x5): some lie near the surface of the skin whereas others lie deeper below the surface. Receptors for proprioception (proprioceptors x3) are found in and around the limbs, either in muscles themselves, in the tendons that attach muscles to bones, or in the joints.
