Document Summary

Prosocial behaviour and cooperation in infancy. From an evolutionary and comparative perspective. Comparing following social rules to cooperative behaviour. I don"t know that i agree with this. Recognizing the valence of actions experiment by premack & premack. Four groups: help, caress, hit, and hinder. The groups of babies were habituated to a video of one action. This indicates that the babies recognize a similar positive valence that babies see as being the same thing. There was a 7/8 preference for the helper. Kuhlmeier expanded on this study. She showed a video of the triangle helping and a square hindering until the child habituated. Then she moved to the test phase. Babies stared more at the inconsistent video. Indiscriminate helping is evolutionarily maladaptive, because sometimes the costs do not outweigh the benefits. Test to see if children know the difference between someone who is unwilling or unable to help.
