Data falsification: a research produces misleading data, can make up a completely new data set or can subtly modify some real data to support their desired conclusions. Applied designed to shed light on the solution to real-world problems (e. g. , effect of cell phone use on driving: directly addresses real-world problems. Basic researchers are interested in the mechanisms that underlie attentional processes. In the late 1950s, researchers examined this using a dichotic listening test. This is designed to understand the fundamentals of attentional processes. Focus on one messages & ignore the other, while repeating the message that one is focusing on. Typically have little memory of the message in the ignored ear. Did find that while most aspects were filtered out, some messages leaked through: they would hear their own name (captured their attention & briefly paid attention to the ignored ear)
