Document Summary
Apply the three prong test to identify the presence of a mental disorder. Describe the ways genes and environment interact to produce mental disorders. Describe how the behaviour of people with psychological illness is maladaptive. To make a diagnosis, we need to look at how it relates to the symptoms. Internal factors factors driven from within (i. e. a sense of pride, satisfaction, or the need to overcome a challenge, as well as compulsions to do things or feeling hopeless) External factors factors that are more tangible (i. e. material reward, good grades, or praise) that come from someone other than the individual, could be orders given by a supervisor or rules in a competition. An individual cannot be diagnosed with a mental disorder if their behaviour is voluntary (i. e. deliberately choosing to lower your calorie count as a method to lose weight rather than feeling the compulsion)
