PSYC 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 30: Sigmund Freud, Anal Stage, Unconscious Mind
PSYC 100 – Lecture 30
Psychodynamic and Humanistic Approaches to Personality
The Psychodynamic Perspective
• Unconscious Processes and Psychodynamics
o Sigmund Freud
o Conscious mind – your current awareness, containing everything you are
aware of right now
o Unconscious mind – a much more vast and powerful but inaccessible part
of your consciousness, operating without your conscious endorsement or
will to influence and guide your behaviors
• The Structure of Personality
o Id – represents a collection of basic biological drives, including those
directed toward sex and aggression
o Superego – comprised of our values and moral standards
o Ego – the decision maker, frequently under tension, trying to reconcile the
opposing urges of the id and superego
• Defence Mechanisms – unconscious strategies the ego uses to reduce or avoid
anxiety
• Personality Development: the Psychosexual Stages
o Fixation – becoming preoccupied with obtaining the pleasure associated
with a particular stage
o Oral stage: 0-18 months
▪ For babies, life is all about sensation of the mouth
▪ A fixation on this stage could result in more vulnerable, less capable
at adjusting to social realities, less ability to deal with anxiety in
adults
o Anal stage (2-3yrs)
