Week 24: Health, Stress and Coping
Topic 01: Stress and Its Management
• Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) or the Holmes and Rahe Stress Scale: Lists 43 stressful
life events, each of which is assigned a value depending on how traumatic that event was felt to
be by a large sample of participants. A total value for stressful life events can be worked out by
adding up the scores for each event experienced over a 12-month period
•
• General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS): A useful framework for understanding a aial’s
physiological response to stressors. Selye proposed a universal response made up of three
stages: alarm, resistance and exhaustion
o Alarm: When an organism is first confronted with a stressor, it responses centre around
the autonomic nervous syste. Durig this stage, the orgais’s resistae to the
stressor temporarily drops below normal, and the organism may experience shock, an
impairment of normal physiological functioning
o Resistance (or adaptation): As the organism adapts to continued exposure, it enters the
stage of resistance. Its autonomic nervous system returns to normal functioning, and
resistance to the stressor increases to above-normal levels
o Exhaustion: if exposure to the stressor continues for a long enough time, the organism
loses its ability to adapt. Resistance falls dramatically, leaving the organism susceptible
to illness or death
