Classical Conditioning: Learning by Association
Pav󴊰󴊳v’󴊷 D󴊳g󴊷
o Classical conditioning: learning that occurs when a neutral stimulus elicits
a response that was originally caused by another stimulus
o I󴊲 Pav󴊰󴊳v’󴊷 ex󴊴e󴊶i󴊱e󴊲󴊸, the neutral stimulus was the sound of the tone,
which was paired with meat powder that could by itself stimulate
salivation
o Unconditioned stimulus: a stimulus that elicits a reflexive response without
learning
o Unconditioned response: a reflexive, unlearned reaction to an
unconditioned stimulus
o Conditioned stimulus: a once-neutral stimulus that later elicits a
conditioned response because it has a history of being paired with an
unconditioned stimulus
o Conditioned response: the learned response that occurs to the
conditioned stimulus
Processes of Classical Conditioning
o Acquisition, Extinction, and Spontaneous Recovery
Acquisition: the initial phase of learning in which a response is
established
Extinction: the loss or weakening of a conditioned response when a
conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus no longer occur
together
