Psyc week 19: conformity( ): adjusting one"s attitudes and behaviors to convince with a group norm , reasons for conformity. Informational influence: a form of social influence that leads a person to conform because they believe others are credible and have more info. Consistency and commitment: people have a strong desire for their attitudes to be consistent with our behaviors. Each time they comply with a request, it modifies their self-concept so they are motivated to act consistently in the future. Once a person has made a commitment, they usually feel inclined to follow through with it. Reciprocity: we treat others as they have treated us. We feel obligated to repay favors, gift and acts of kindness, even when they are unsolicited . Social proof: we are inclined to follow the lead of others. If we witness others doing something, we are more likely to do it as well.
