Becomes the electoral home of southern states. 1960s conflicts over civil rights generates partisan change tumultuous decade. 1968 lindon johnson takes over after jfk assassination. Richard nixon- was vp, ran against jfk and lost. The southern states who had traditionally voted for democrats, might be open to change for the republican party if they were willing to essentially change the platform to (cid:271)e a(cid:271)out (cid:862)traditio(cid:374)al (cid:448)alues(cid:863) In the 60s it was no longer acceptable to be openly racist.
