The first african american president opening the museum was very important and recognizing the african american experience in american life. Impossible to understand american history or politics without the centrality of racial issues and controversy. It has played a big role in shaping major political parties. Post civil war, the solid south in the democratic party: the south lost that civil war and was forced to come back into the united states, leading the war to free slaves was abraham lincoln. Formed as an abolishment party, first democrat, and lincoln is the first. The deafeted white south then rejected the republican party, (not going to board a party that forced them to dismantle and end slavery). White southerners seek political representation with the democratic party of the time (andrew jackson) and they followed them to the democratic party. Common to talk of the souther states as the solid south, solid for the democratic party.
