Outline: history and development of socialism, major tenets of socialism, marxism: human nature, marxism: what is capitalism, class conflict, labour theory of value, alienation, crisis in capitalism, why socialism, the role of the state and ideology in capitalism. Critique of capitalism as unequal and unfree (ownership comes with privileges, and since most people have to sell their labour, they are technically unfree. Critique of liberalism as dominant ideology supporting capitalism. Equality as highly valued: relative economic and political equality (within reasonable limits) for all. Freedom maximize positive freedom (maximize the amount of choices people can make) Progress through history toward a rational and free society. Property should be communally shared (water example) State in capitalism (as maintaining exploitation) vs. greater democratic role in socialist future. Class class divisions/conflict will bring capitalism to an end-future classless society. Creative/productive is what makes us human, different from animals. Sociable we don"t really exist as individuals.
