Bachrach & baratz - power as agenda - setting. Foucault - power as the production of the self. Assumption in liberalism (economic and political liberalism) that liberal democracy and capitalism reinforce each other - emphasis in both on freedom (of the market, of association, of the vote, etc) Force of capitalism - have we become more consumers than citizens ? (reich"s article and this week"s assignment) Do they make democracy ineffective because nobody needs to pay attention to it? e. x: dairy farmers. Role of capitalism: make profit e. g greater efficiencies, new technologies, innovations in production & products. Good deals, value for money, lots of choice. Role of democracy: deliberate about the common good, and about distribution of wealth, set the rules of the game - (n. b this is developmental democracy ) Widely available social goods (e. g education, health care) The latter all tend to raise the cost of goods. That people should be involved in governing themselves.
