PHAR 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 99: Tricyclic Antidepressant, Psychomotor Agitation, Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor
Document Summary
Mdd - major depressive disorder is chronic, reoccurring and potentially life threatening. Worsens the health of those with chronic illness. 10 % of men and 25% of women experience depression at some point in their lives. Depression can be situational unpleasant life circumstances, negative thinking patterns, substance abuse, side effect of medications. Depression can occur for biological reasons genetic, hormonal (women are particularly susceptible), neurobiological dysfunction, symptoms from a second disorder (ie. parkinsons) *it can occur without the person knowing ie. the elderly often show symptoms of depression such as insomnia and weight loss without feeling sad. Describe the mechanism of action for each: first generation antidepressants; tricyclic antidepressants (tca) and monoamine oxides inhibitors (maoi). Mechanism tca: block presynaptic reuptake transporter for serotonin and ne. Adverse effects: blocks postsynaptic receptors for ach, histamine and ne. Confusion, memory/ cognitive impairment and sedation and dizziness respectively.
