All things artistic were banned as frivolous . Monarchy restored in 1660 and artistic life slowly returned. Henry purcell (1659 1695: like mozart, purcell was a prolific genius whose life was all too short, his opera, dido and aeneas (1689) allows us a glimpse into the way opera had evolved since. Monteverdi: apart from being his first major opera in english, Dido and aeneas closely reflects certain trends that were also present in italian opera, and in the french operas that appeared at that time: the distinction between recitative and aria had become quite strict.
