Module 1a: the role of lawyers in canadian society. Their main objective is to protect the rule of law: the magna carta was signed in 1215 by english king john and his barons. This was so that the king could no longer act in an arbitrary way but was made to follow a fair legal process in all matters. The charter was then read and expanded onto the monarchs and the british parliament. The law : must be applied fairly to all (everyone is accountable to the law, must be created fairly (is an overarching principle that governs the creation of laws and their implementation in democratic nations) Lawyers are essential in protecting the law: anti-terrorism bill (bill c-51, to stop the promotion of terrorism, prevent terrorists from implementing their plots, and to disrupt terror plots, canadian bar association. Lawyers are either more inclined to side with their clients or serve the law as a greater purpose.
