HLTH 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Binary System, Ageism
Document Summary
Has many definitions but this is based of prof"s opinion. A set of norms, ideologies, practices, and power relations that create and enforce differences between (and among) women and men: gender is socially produced to seem natural, binary system in its dominant form. Social attributes that are labeled either feminine or masculine. Processing of molding and judging individual bodies and identities, with surveillance and sanctions applied to ensure conformity. Identities and roles that are learned and performed. Note: traditionally, sex was defined as an innate, unchanging biological characteristic distinguishing females from males. Increasingly, however, scientists and gender theorists find that the attributes of sex exist on a continuum and that beliefs about gender help define binary notions of sex. Gender is a process of molding and judging individuals body. We learn to become men or women as we grow from birth.
