Loss of control: cannot block impulse to perform behavior (behavior no longer bring pleasure and becomes necessary to avoid pain) Escalation: more of substance/activity required to produce desired effects (tolerance) (repeated performance creates a positive feedback loop) Negative consequences: behavior continues despite problems with academics/jobs, relationships, health, law, finances (behavior more important than consequences: behavioral addiction. Internet/gaming addiction: physical dependence (greater relapse rates, medical problems) Current use, resulting in failure to fulfill major responsibilities at work, school or home. Recurrent use in situations in which it is physically hazardous.
