Palestinian infiltrators (refugees who were crossing the borders and wanted to return to. Jordan awarded citizenship to all palestinians in the kingdom their villages. Palestinians took a back seat in the conflict that started to be conducted between states. Rise of ideologically driven groups: baath (syrian and iraq), free officers in egypt. They had socialist ideology; wanted to help the lower class. Wanted to expand education to the lower classes mainly peasant children. Lower classes would be able to go up in the social ladder. They thought that by doing this they would modernize society and restore what has been stolen after the defeat in 1948. Syria, 1948-49, was a country that had coups, political instability. Abdullah, king of jordan, outlawed the use of the word palestine, only west bank and east bank. Abdullah stated a peace talks with israel for the formation of a peace treaty. Arab league threatened to expel jordan: talks stopped.
