Document Summary
Week 2 lecture part ii: social and political change (1880-1920) The separate worlds of city and country, rich and poor: There was a divide between modern, european and the traditional, rural world. Rural areas: peasants using same tools/agricultural methods that pre-hispanic ancestors used. Brazil: riot by urban dwellers against public health workers giving vaccinations against yellow fever. Inspected homes, if it was deemed unsanitary the houses were demolished and people were displaced. This was only because the elites wanted "unsanitary" lands. This provided la reformers with a diagnosis of their issues. Development meant modernizing the people and prevent "backward-thinking". Traditional la during this era resisted because they didn"t want to change in a negative way. Backward technologies were well adapted to the land and climate. They produced with low cost and low risk. Indigenous peoples held into traditions that they felt were significant.
