Hist 274: cultural hist. of modern france, jan 19, 2017. French revolution: the crisis of the monarchy, 1786-1789, calonne and the assembly of notables. Decided the only solution was to win over the nobility and draw them in. Called the most notable of the aristocracy together. To calonne"s surprise, they demanded a share of power. A return to an old system of government that france hadn"t seen since the rise of absolutism. Calonne was fired by the king, as it seemed he only weakened the: brienne and the parlement of paris. Refused to register any law that made any reforms to the tax system. Aroused the people in the country, towns, paris against reforming the economy and increasing the tax load. Nobility won over public by claiming they opposed arbitrary government. Controller generals tried to deal with the economic crisis after 1789, as there was no more postponing it.
