After 1204 byzantium was never the same again. Latin romania, byzantine nicea and epiros 1204-1261 the era of the palaiologoi: the disintegration of byzantine and rise of the ottomans. Late 12th c: instability surrounds end of komnenoi. Empire fragmenting: groups around the peripheries of the empire were looking for a solution for the empire for their people and began to leave from lack on universal identity. 2 leader emerged as rulers after fall of constantinople: nicea and epiros. Breakaway of sub-byzantine states around this time these byzantine groups continue to disagree and struggle with each other thinking they are the leaders of constantinople. Byzantium after 1204: the latin empire of romania. Baldwin and boniface dead in 3 years. Latin fighting in 4 years- even within constantinople. Nicea run by 2 families: laskaris, vatatzes, they (cid:373)ou(cid:374)ted the (cid:373)ost (cid:396)esista(cid:374)(cid:272)e to the lati(cid:374)(cid:859)s i(cid:374) co(cid:374)sta(cid:374)ti(cid:374)ople. Espiros run by the families: arta, angelos.
