Racialization and intersectional analysis + review of week 1 material. A way of life (of people, a period, or group) Works and practices of intellectual and artistic activity. Against high culture (things that privileged people had the exclusive opportunity of enjoying) Mona lisa, high culture but replicas of it = popular culture. Mass culture (produced for the consumption of the masses, not organic) Folk culture means belonging to the people, produced by the people, authentic. A range of popular texts (videos, music, any type of symbol not just written) which signify meaning through words, images, or practices. Rise of popular culture was in line with the rise of industrialization. New media = social media, internet, email, etc. When you read something on social media you rarely check for accuracy. Ask yourself questions about the content seen on social media. Media literacy helps us to understand produce and negotiate meanings in a culture made up of powerful images words or sounds.
