ENSC 203 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Lake Ontario, Improved Water Source, Tylenol (Brand)
Document Summary
Water a global environmental resource: over the last 100 years: total global supply of fresh water (precipitation) has been constant: ~110,00 km3 (surface water must be treated before use: water for food and rural development. Human use of fresh water has increased 6-fold. Our consumption of water has gone up 6 fold. Total current estimated water needs (~7 billion people) ~118,000km3. Just over the sustainable limit, but water is not distributed uniformly, so many stress points exist. If insufficient water available, will see poor health in community. Water use not sustainable: some progress in reducing water use. Mainly from more efficient technologies regulations on toilets, showers, etc. some conservation based (restrictions on lawn water, car washing, etc. ) Most have sufficient water, quality of the water is still an issue if lack of water, provide it through major engineering projects (dams, reservoirs and distribution systems)
