Canadians generate 35 million tonnes per year. Old dumps (of the past) sited at location of convenience (i. e old worked out sand or gravel pits, a hole in the ground love canal) No control of waste (solid, liquid hazardous and non-hazardous) little or no engineered operations. Need for proper site and suitability assessment. Need for proper operations, maintenance and monitoring. Need to control development in buffer zones (even in remote areas) and landfill after-use. These risks need to be evaluated in comparison with the risks and environmental impacts of alternative means of disposal. May look simple, but landfills and barrier systems for landfills are very complex systems. Watch for cost conscious" proponents not being prepared to do it right". Keep up to date as waste streams and needs change so too must regulations and designs. Regulators having the time and training to regulate correctly. Lack of understanding by people of what is required and involved.
